Provence, often seen as the ultimate summer getaway, is a beautiful region with a rich mix of coastlines, mountains, gorges, and historic sites. Artists have long been inspired by its natural beauty, for instance, in painting, not only Cezanne, who was born in Aix-en-Provence, but also Van Gogh and Matisse, who were fascinated by the strong light of the region, painted Provence with colors not found in northern France. The influence of Provence extends beyond painting, leaving its mark on music, literature, and cinema.
At our bar, Le Rêve, we feature five paintings by a student of Monticelli, a Marseille-born painter whose brushwork had a strong influence on Van Gogh.
All across France, towns maintain a harmonious blend of tradition and nature, with rooftops and shutters thoughtfully coordinated in color. In Provence in particular, red terracotta roof tiles are often paired with sky-blue or almond-green shutters. This visual harmony isn’t merely the result of having few modern buildings, but rather the product of local regulations that govern architecture and color schemes to protect the beauty of the landscape.

Located in southeastern France along the Mediterranean coast, Provence enjoys hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Major cities in the region include Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Nice, and Cannes. While the coastal areas remain comfortable even in the colder months, the region is swept by the Mistral from winter to spring, a strong, cold wind from the north that can last for over a week. The Mistral plays a key role in shaping Provence’s climate, bringing crisp, dry air and consistently clear skies.
This unique Mediterranean climate has had a strong influence on the region’s food culture.
Provençal cuisine, rooted in the natural bounty of the Mediterranean, is known for its simple, healthy dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Olive oil, herbs, tomatoes, and seafood are staples, and summer vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, and eggplant are key to dishes such as ratatouille and tian. The cuisine is a celebration of summer flavors and is loved all around the world.
